Erik and I have been talking about taking a day trip into DC for months now, but we just never really got around to it. Until last weekend. It was a little bit of a gray day, but we decided that it was just time to do it. We've taken Jacob to the National Zoo before, but we never ventured down to the Mall. We also never took the metro with him. We've always driven to the zoo. So we packed up the stroller and told Jacob that we were going to ride an electric train. He was pretty happy about that, and seemed to enjoy the ride. We got off at the Archives stop and wandered on over to the Mall. Jacob loved running up and down the path. His favorite thing to do lately is to let us walk ahead a few paces, then he runs up behind us and yells "I got you!"
He thought running around the Washington Monument (or the "big tower") was pretty cool.
We left the Monument and walked down the mall, stopping at the World War II memorial along the way. Jacob wanted so desperately to touch the water.
From there, we walked on down to the Lincoln Memorial. Erik walked Jacob up the steps to see Lincoln -- or "the sitting statue."
We walked through the Vietnam Memorial, then made our way back towards the metro stop in search of lunch. We thought about going to one of the museums, but we didn't want to push our first trip and make it too full. So after lunch, we wandered on back to the metro stop, paused for a few minutes at the Navy Memorial, and headed for home.
Jacob fell asleep on the ride home, but woke up as we got off the metro. Just in time to see a diesel train pass by. He was in heaven -- riding on an electric train AND seeing a diesel.
So even though it was a short visit, it was still a good visit. Next time, we'll conquer a museum.
